Celebrate Chico O'Farrill's 102nd birthday on October 28, on ¡Corriente!Liito, El Loco Del Barrio Pocho, will host an evening celebrating the legacy of Chico O´Farrill, the Irish-German Cuban musician, composer, arranger, and bandleader who was one of the half-dozen musical innovators who guided the fusion of Afro-Cuban feeling and rhythm with the playing styles and instrumentation of the big swing bands, planting the seeds of today's Latin Jazz and Salsa ("Latin Jazz that ya dance to"). O'Farrill wrote and arranged for many - if not most - of the bandleaders from the 1940s until the beginning of the 21st Century. Bid bands didn't die . . . Chico O'Farrill and his pals taught 'em to speak Spanish.
