The Democratic National Convention (DNC) brought thousands to Chicago last week, but not everyone spent their time actually attending the DNC. As Democrats assembled in Chicago to celebrate the nomination of Kamala Harris for president, protesters from around the country joined with Chicago’s large Palestinian community – one of the largest in the country – in daily demonstrations, calling for not only a ceasefire in Gaza, but a U.S. arms embargo to Israel. Union Park was the site of several rallies and the launch point for loud marches near the United Center, where the convention was held.
Thousands gathered last Wednesday afternoon (August 21) alone to hear from local activists and educators, along with leaders on the left. The demonstration stayed largely peaceful, coming a day after violence by police against protesters led to 56 arrests at a smaller unsanctioned protest outside the Israeli consulate.
KGNU’s Denver program manager, Dave Ashton, attended the march and spoke with a handful of protesters, most of whom wished to remain anonymous given the risks involved with rallying at the DNC. You can hear those voices for peace here.
