A question coined by the coal workers of Harlan County nearly 100 years ago was asked again by the Colorado community on June 2. Outside of the GEO ICE Detention Center in Aurora, protestors sang Florence Reece’s “Which Side Are You On?” as a call to organize to support Jeanette Vizguerra and other undocumented individuals detained by federal officials.
Jeanette Vizguerra is a nationally recognized civil rights activist who was taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside of her place of work on March 17.
Vizguerra is known for her decades of struggle in the immigrant rights movement, acting as a community voice and immigration activist for more than 20 years, since she arrived in the U.S. from Mexico City without documentation in the late 90s.
She has been uplifted consistently on KGNU, before her current detainment and during. Every Thursday, including this morning, “All Out For Jeanette Vizguerra” has been featured on KGNU’s Resistance Calendar. Each Monday, the rally and vigil is hosted by local social justice groups in Colorado outside of the detention center.
KGNU News Intern Ainsley Coogan attended the most recent rally for Jeanette this past Monday. Communications Workers of America 7799 and Defenders Union of Colorado co-led the rally.
