Andrew Romanoff Plans to Run in 2020 Senate Race Challenging Gardner

Former Speaker of the house Andrew Romanoff is the latest Democrat to announce that he is planning on seeking the party’s nomination to challenge Cory Gardner in the 2020 senate. Speaking at the biennial ReOrganization meeting held by the Boulder County Democrats on February 2, 2019, Romanoff told KGNU’s Rossana Longo Better that he plans on running because so many things need to change in Congress.

[edit: This story was amended on 2/5/19 to say that Romanoff is planning on running in the 2020 Senate race. He has not officially announced that he will run.]

“I’m planning to run for the United States Senate against Cory Gardner because I think we can do so much better than the administration we’ve gotten which is blocking reform on Universal Healthcare, on energy, on economic justice, on immigration reform – all the changes we need to make sure we maintain our position as a leader in the world and welcome people from around the world to contribute their talents to this country, just like my mother and all four of my grandparents were able to do. I wouldn’t be here not just in Longmont, but in the United States, if this nation hadn’t opened its doors to my family. I want to continue that tradition and I want to make sure that this earth survives this administration that we continue to invest in renewable energy so that all of us, not just human beings but the other creatures with which we share this planet can continue to call the earth home.”

Romanoff, who currently heads up Mental Health Colorado, served in the state house of representatives from 2000 to 2008, serving as Speaker from 2005 to 2008.
