After Hours at the Bookclub: ZEE JLF in Boulder – David Baron

David Baron, author of American Eclipse: A Nation’s Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World, writes about an eclipse that happened in 1878 across the American West, darkening skies from Montana Territory to Texas.

In After Hours at the Bookclub from the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival in Boulder, he shares his thoughts on the most recent American eclipse that happened across a large swathe of America on August 21st, 2017.

“The lead up to the eclipse on August 21st was crazy, America had eclipse fever and frankly I have had eclipse fever for 19 years since I saw my first total solar eclipse in 1998 and I had been looking forward to August 21st, 2017 for that long, and things were pretty crazy, media interviews and so forth, and just my own excitement leading up to August 21st, so I’ve been taking the last month just taking time out mentally and physically.”

Baron has seen 6 total solar eclipses and he ranks the most recent solar eclipse as second in that list. “I was on a mountaintop in the Tetons, over 10,000 feet with almost a dozen family members. The skies were cloudless, the eclipse itself was breathtaking and being there with my family – it was just spectacular.”

“It’s just a rare opportunity to step out of your day to day life, be reminded of just the marvel of creation and the wonder that we exist on this planet at all, and the beauty of the sun, and for people to gather in this humble way and to realize that we’re all the same.”

ZEE JLF at Boulder happens at the Boulder Public Library September 15-17th.

The radio bookclub is a collaboration between KGNU and the Boulder Bookstore and is co-hosted by KGNU News Director Maeve Conran and Arsen Kashkashian, head buyer at the Boulder Bookstore.
