Destination Freedom presents “Black” by Lamaria Aminah kgnu
After one more young black man dies at the hands of police, a community is shaken. A conversation evolves between two mothers at the vigil – one white and one black. Through their interaction, BLACK. gets to the heart of the matter on communication between races.
After the performance, donnie l. betts led a community discussion that included Aurora Police Chief Metz, police/community activist Roshan Blitz, Dr. Deb Ortega, founder of DU’s Latino Center for Community Engagement and Scholarship, Council Member Angela Lawson, and attendees.
Musical guest Monique Brooks Roberts and friends delivered their mix of jazz, soul, and a stirring rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
Destination Freedom is the winner of four awards for radio excellence from the Colorado Association of Black Journalists. Producer donnie l. betts was named 2002 Radio Journalist of the Year.
The series and will continue in October and November with new productions.
