Boulder County has declared Saturday, July 23 Clela Rorex Day. Rorex, who passed away earlier this summer, was a gay rights activist who, in 1975, while serving as the newly elected Boulder county clerk, became the first clerk in the nation to knowingly certify a marriage license between a same-sex couple. Before being pushed out of office, Rorex issued marriage licenses to six gay couples. KGNU’s Alexis Kenyon spoke with Mardi Moore, one of Clela’s close friends and the executive director of Out Boulder County, who says Clela fought for equal rights until the day she died.
