Mounting evidence shows that Black mothers and infants run a significantly higher risk of mortality in the United States than their white counterparts – regardless of income. A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research cross referenced income and tax data with health data for over two million births in California over 9 years.
It found that health outcomes were generally better for those in higher income brackets – except for wealthy Black mothers and their babies.
Sister-to-Sister, an international network of professional African American women will be hosting an event in Denver this Saturday centering the issue of health equity. Black Talk host Michele Simpson spoke with Sister-to-Sister’s founder Velveta Golightly-Howell.
