In this episode of Connections, we are talking about language, identity, and access to higher education with host Rossana Longo-Better and esteemed guests, Doris Loayza, Mitch Teplitsky, Leila Gómez and Rubén Viramontez Anguiano.
Doris Loayza is a Teaching Assistant Professor at CU Boulder, where she teaches Quechua language and culture, as well as Latin American Studies. She grew up in the Peruvian Andes and is a native Quechua and Spanish speaker. She’s also a documentary and podcast producer focused on Indigenous storytelling.
Mitch Teplitsky is a documentary filmmaker whose work has focused on immigrant and Peruvian stories, including films broadcast on PBS and screened around the world. His work often explores identity, movement, and cultural connection.
Leila Gómez is a professor in Women and Gender Studies at CU Boulder. She researches Latin American literature, Indigenous land and environment, and Indigenous feminisms. She also founded the Quechua Program at CU, helping establish it as a language that fulfills university requirements.
Rubén Viramontez Anguiano is a professor and founding chair at CU Denver, focused on family diversity, social justice, and Indigenous practices, with experience even representing the university at the United Nations.
