DJ: Matt
What shows do you host on KGNU and how long have you been with the station?
Currently Old Grass Gnu Grass, but I was also in the Highway 322 rotation for several years. I’ve been with KGNU for 11 years, but have 25 years of experience hosting shows on community stations in Colorado.
Who is your favorite artist and/or album of all time?
T O U G H question because I studied jazz in college and listen to a lot of different genres besides bluegrass. There are a lot of favorites so I’ll go with one bluegrass and one other…
Artist: Bluegrass – Del McCoury; Other – Pat Metheny
Album: Bluegrass – John Hartford Aereo-Plain; Other – Joni Mitchell – Shadows and Light
What is your Zodiac sign and what (if anything) does it say about you?
I am a Taurus, but in a typical Taurus-way I don’t follow astrology.
If you could have any musician’s record collection, whose would it be?
Probably Mike Compton the mandolin player and educator (think mandolin kickoff for Man of Constant Sorrow). He was part of John Hartford’s band and is one of those guys who always surprises me with his depth and knowledge of music.
What song do you never get tired of playing on air?
I’m diggin’ deep here, but Whole Lot More Living from Rickey Wasson’s From the Heart and Soul. Ricky played in JD Crowe’s band for many years. It’s a very fun tune and the players are a who’s-who of the bluegrass world like J.D. Crowe, Don Rigsby, Randy Kohrs, Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, and Harold Nixon. It does a lot in 2:14 minutes. So good!!!
What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m not a musician or a DJ in the real world and I graduated high school with Tweedy and Farrar. Music has been a huge part of my life for a very long and I love sharing bluegrass with my friends and neighbors on Old Grass Gnu Grass.
