3 Injured With One in Serious Condition After Shooting at Evergreen High School; BVSD Changes to Attendance Boundary Jack Armstrong

Shooting At Evergreen High School

A teenager shot two other students at Evergreen High School Wednesday and then killed himself.  The suspect opened fire with a handgun in the early afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

A spokesperson said that emergency responders were on the scene two minutes after receiving a 911 call.  All three students were taken to the hospital, where the alleged shooter was later pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot.  One of the two students that were shot remained in serious condition as of Wednesday evening, according to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

The other student is said to be in stable condition. CNN reports that this was the 47th school shooting in the United States this year.

BVSD Changes Attendance Boundary

The Boulder Valley School Board is moving forward with proposed changes to school attendance boundaries .  At their meeting Tuesday, board members endorsed a plan that includes shifting a small area of Gunbarrel from Crest View Elementary to Heatherwood Elementary.

The goal: boost enrollment at Heatherwood, which is launching a new environmental STEM program this year after facing low student numbers.

The board will take a formal vote on the changes September 23rd, with implementation planned for fall 2026. Impacted families can keep their children in current schools through 5th or 8th grade, but transportation likely won’t be provided.

In Gunbarrel, 52 elementary students live in the affected area—most currently attend Crest View. Middle schoolers in the same zone would switch from Centennial to Platt Middle School.

According to the Daily Camera, some families voiced concerns about the move, questioning Heatherwood’s long-term future and the potential disruption to neighborhood cohesion.

Another proposed change would eliminate a dual-enrollment option for 37 students in south-central Boulder, assigning them solely to Bear Creek Elementary.

District officials say these boundary adjustments aim to balance student populations across shrinking schools, while still preserving family choice through open enrollment.

Safeway Closes 10 Colorado Stores

Safeway announced plans this week to close 10 Colorado stores by November at locations across the Front Range and Eastern Plains — including Englewood, Northglenn, Denver, Aurora, Fort Collins, Loveland, Colorado Springs, La Junta, and Lamar.

The company says the closures come as part of a larger restructuring following the merger of two internal divisions. One store in New Mexico and another in Nebraska will also close by November.

Heather Halpape with Safeway’s Mountain West Division says the decision follows “long and careful deliberation,” and that the company is working to transfer employees to nearby locations.

But union leaders aren’t buying it. UFCW Local 7, representing workers at eight of the affected stores, says the closures will leave some communities—especially La Junta and Lamar—without full-service grocery options. Residents there may have to travel up to 60 miles to shop.

Earlier closures included a Safeway in Lakewood and a King Soopers in Centennial. A proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger fell through late last year.
