The annual event is strategically timed after Thanksgiving to encourage community members to bring their leftover grease from holiday meals for proper disposal. Holiday meals can leave gallons of unwanted, used cooking oil that shouldn’t be poured down drains or pipes. Used cooking oil can congeal, resulting in clogs and blockages in homes and the public collection system. In addition to cooking grease, South Platte Renew is accepting used automotive oil.
The event is free and open to all residents in the South Platte Renew service area. Residents can drop off up to 10 gallons of cooking grease and automotive oil per household.
Cooking grease and automotive oil should be properly prepared for drop off by separating into different containers and free of contaminants such as fuels, solvents, or water. Used cooking oil should be liquid and free of food debris. The facility is unable to accept any oil filters, antifreeze, oil, or chemicals from commercial businesses.
