KGNU and Eco-Cycle present a Community Conversation on Plastic Waste
Plastic waste is a "planetary crisis", according to the United Nations, harming the world's oceans, marine life, and communities that depend on them. Plastic can be found almost everywhere, from the bottom of the ocean to the seafood on your dinner plate, even in your feces. Sadly, about 75 percent of all the plastic ever created is now considered waste, only nine percent of which has been recycled. Americans alone throw away about 33.6 million tons of plastic each year.

So what are the challenges and opportunities for reducing plastic waste in Boulder County?

On Thursday, January 31, KGNU Community Radio and Eco-Cycle will host a special Community Conversation on plastic waste that will include representatives from Eco-Cycle, the Inland Ocean Coalition and local business and sustainability leaders. The community conversation will solicit input from attendees.

We'll look at the challenges in recycling many different plastics, and we'll discuss what individuals and businesses can do to reduce plastic waste in Boulder County.

Boulder County residents, industry professionals, organizers, and the general public are invited to participate. Doors open at 6 p.m., the panel conversation will get started at 6:30 p.m. and conclude with open discussion and questions from 7:30-8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided in the lobby. Please RSVP to let us know you're coming.

Thanks to the support from the Boulder County Resource Conservation Divisions Zero Waste Funding Program, KGNU's year-long Zero Waste Radio Series and Public Education Media Campaign in 2018 featured in-depth news stories and public service announcements. The series was designed to educate and inform listeners on the dynamics and underlying issues around zero waste and recycling in our communities.
