Friday, February 25th, 2011The Youth Corp provides opportunities for Boulder County teens to develop a sense of community involvement through personal accomplishment, teamwork and service to the county. Since 1996, participants, aged 14-17, have been completing projects for Boulder County departments, municipalities and towns. Corps members benefit by learning strong work habits, new skills and the value of environmental and civic stewardship. County departments, municipalities and towns benefit from the maintenance projects and tangible products such as new trails built by Corp members each summer. Calming Kids Yoga
Thursday, February 24th, 2011This non-violent teacher training helps kids manage childhood obesity, stress, self abuse, bullying, and violent behavior with a comprehensive, classically-based yoga program in the public school system. The concepts in the program are kindness, compassion, and communication. Combining moving energy with a high level of body and breathing awareness to exercise the physical body controls anger and manages stress. Calming Kids Yoga classes incorporate strength, flexibility and flowing postures to work the muscles in an aerobic way to help release excess energy and anxiety, to help relax the body and calm the mind for a happy, healthy, peaceful child. Prodigal Son
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011In 2009 Prodigal Son Initiative was given space in a church to run their signature after-school program. The program mentors and tutors fifty to seventy-five at-risk students ages eight to thirteen Monday through Thursday for two hours with a healthy snack and a group discussion. Mentors allow each child to speak freely about peer pressure, family and community issues they are experiencing, and centers education around nutrition, health and opportunities outside their community. Truancy rates have dropped significantly for all youths involved in our program. During the second hour, the children participate in a variety of activities which have been created through key strategic alliances. Nadia Khasawneh gets the details.
Up For Pups
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011Up For Pups improves the lives of mistreated domestic animals through creative public education initiatives. They provide free animal advocacy materials to rescue organizations to help them educate the public about pet overpopulation, puppy mills, responsible pet selection and parenting, and volunteer opportunities. They gather information from the top existing dog rescues to develop a comprehensive guide to starting and running a rescue. They also plan to create a simple dog training program for children and dogs in low-income communities that is easily replicable across the nation.
