Thursday, December 16th, 2010The holiday kids bike giveaway is just one of many events for Community Cycles. They have about 300 refurbished bikes for smaller children to give away. Last year, Community Cycles distributed 300 bikes in just three hours. Event proceeds fund Community Cycle advocacy and biking programs. Sue Prant chats with host Nikki Kayser about the growing Boulder organization and its programs. They educate and advocate for the safe use of bicycles.
FISKE Planetarium
Wednesday, December 15th, 2010Alec Harris chats with Doug Duncan, the head of the FISKE Planetarium about the lunar eclipse on the Winter Solstice this year. We will be in the moon’s shadow for about an hour, but the action starts an hour beforehand at 11:30 PM Dec 20th. The planetarium in Boulder on the University of Colorado campus begins the party at 10:30 PM. All three telescopes will be open to the public.

For all of us, information can mean equality and opportunity. Doors are not only opened by information but it tells us where those doors are. The materials that need to be read are newspapers, magazines, children’s books and an endless variety of print. Volunteers all over Colorado can read and record for Audio Information Network of Colorado. Kat Lindgren chats with host Nikki Kayser about how information can end isolation.
Sienna Project
Friday, December 10th, 2010Camille Hook Chats with host Nikki Kayser about the Boulder chapter of the Sienna Projects that build schools in small indigenous mountain villages in the Highlands of Guatemala, where there may not be enough classrooms or no classrooms at all. The national government pays teachers’ salaries, but does not provide funds for school buildings. In many villages children never go to school for lack of classrooms.
Community First Foundation
Wednesday, December 8th, 2010To strengthen the metropolitan Denver community, they are kicking off a day of giving for hundreds of local non-profits. There are incentive funds added proportionately to help make the goal of $2 million. Colorado Gives Day is a project of the Community First Foundation. Boulder Independent Business Alliance will encourage area residents to spend their holiday dollars at locally owned independent businesses and recycle money in our local community. There will be indoor booth space promoting local businesses and panel discussions for the community to learn about the importance of shopping locally, including local non-profits, activities for children, entertainment, art, food, independent media. Sustainable Greenhouse Design
Wednesday, December 1st, 2010Learn how to build a greenhouse that needs no supplemental heating year round at the Denver Botanic Gardens. This greenhouse design, involving stored water as thermal mass and our bountiful Colorado sun, can be used with recycled materials or new. You can apply this method to pre-existing greenhouses, attached or single units. Water is the most efficient thermal mass but there are many other options as well . Host Nikki Kayser chats with instructor Penn Parmenter about the popular workshop. She and her husband Cord built their greenhouse out of 90% recycled materials for $150 and it sits on top of a decomposed granite mountain at 8,120 ft. This technique works at any altitude. Fresh, organic food year round in Colorado is a sure thing – we have more than enough sun.
