Founder of the Thorne Ecological Institute, Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, chats with host Nikki Kayser about turning kids onto the environment for fifty-six years. Sombrero Marsh field trips teach students about wetland ecology, animal and plant adaptations, seed dispersal, and water pollution. All activities are hands-on and take place at a beautiful rare salt marsh. Students of  Boulder Valley School District learn to use binoculars and identify birds, bird calls, and animal tracks. International Hearing Dog trains dogs to assist persons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing with and without multiple disabilities at no cost to the recipient. Each dog’s training is specific to its companion’s needs, such as answering a cell phone, signaling a baby’ cry or microwave stove. Mickey is in training with his deaf owner. He signals other runners on the trails. Bob Cooley chats with host Nikki Kayser about their lovable and clever dogs.

The Inn Between in Longmont provides transitional housing and services for diverse homeless individuals and families to help them achieve self-sufficiency.Donna Lavato chats with host Nikki Kayser about some of the folks she has helped get back on their feet- teenagers, unemployed executives, single mothers and more. Residents must work/study and pay rent according to their income. The Orange Door consignment shop on Main Street helps finance residents.

Colorado American Red Cross

Adeeb Khan is the director of health and safety and community services with the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross. He chats with host Maeve Conran about volunteering with the  transportation program to drive elderly residents on a regular basis. The Red Cross transportation program is unique in that it provides “door through door” service, meaning that drivers assist clients in getting from their homes, into and out of the vehicle, and into and out of the building where their appointment takes place. The program fills a gap for those whose circumstances make it difficult or impossible to use other transportation methods, such as Special Transit, buses or even taxis.
