Girls Rock Denver is an organization that empowers young women and girls by putting instruments in their hands and unveiling what they already possess in their feet, fingertips, vocal cords, hearts, and minds. KGNU’s Veronica Lingo chats with Katie Rothry to find out their philosophy.

The Colorado Trail Foundation

The Colorado Trail stretches nearly 500 miles from Denver to Durango and was built and is maintained by volunteers. The Colorado Trail Foundation helps organize volunteers to maintain the trail. They will host an event called Hiking The Colorado Trail on Tuesday July 13th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the REI Denver Flagship Store. The event will feature a slide show of one hiker’s trip as well as important information on the trail and the Foundation. The store is located at 1416 Platte Street near downtown Denver. The event is free to the public but space is limited and they are asking people to register before at REI. For maps and more information on the Colorado Trail or the foundation, go to Colorado Trail. Colorado Anti-Violence Program

The Colorado Anti-Violence Program since 1986 has been dedicated to eliminating violence within and against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities in Colorado, and providing the highest quality services to survivors. CAVP provides direct services including crisis intervention, information, and referrals for LGBTQ survivors of violence 24 hours a day. They also provides technical assistance, training, and education for community organizations, law enforcement, and mainstream service providers on violence issues affecting the LGBTQ community.The most common types of violence we work with are hate crimes and partner abuse. We also have cases that involve random violence, sexual assault, and HIV-motivated violence. Crystal Middlestadt spoke with KGNU’s Forrest Young-Taft.

Push America

Push America programs were created to educate and provide a quality hands-on service experience for members of Pi Kappa Phi while enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Many undergraduates are changing their majors to special education, and others are more socially aware of disability issues. KGNU’s Beth Bartel finds out more from James Loy.

The Summer Food Colorado is a campaign to make sure school-aged kids get enough good food during the summer when school is out. What happens in the summer to the children who use the school meals to stay healthy during the year? Governor Ritter just signed into law a bill that removes the asset test from food stamps and directs the state to create a public-private outreach plan. Federal money is available for summer meals, but few towns in Colorado know about it.  Formerly the Colorado Coalition to End hunger, Kathy Underhill, Executive Director of Hunger Free Colorado chats with host Nikki Kayser about how they are going to change that.

Not For Sale Campaign

The Not For Sale Campaign will hold a 2.7 mile walk at City Park in Denver in order to raise money and awareness to protect and defend those who are unable to protect themselves from slavery and human trafficking. KGNU’s Ronald Eugene Knabenbauer chats with Pam Harvey. Clean Air Challenge

Boulder County’s Clean Air Challenge is on! Find out more in Beth Bartel’s interview with Dottie Hofler.

Vehicles emit a large percentage of the pollutants that combine to form ground-level ozone. Individual and corporate participation in the Clean Air Challenge can significantly improve ozone levels in the community. Ground-level ozone currently is the Denver region’s greatest air quality concern. The Front Range region has come close to the federal limit for several years and violated the federal health-based standard in 2007.  In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created a new, stricter ozone standard.
