Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.KGNU’s newest reporter, Kat Moon, finds out more.  The Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA) will share the adventure of real railroading and the fun of model railroading with children selected by the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Denver.

Rocky Mountain Opera Company, was founded in 2010 to provide opportunities for mature singers aged 45 and up to continue to develop their art and to share their expertise and joy of singing with others. Their  initial projects will be concerts of arias and opera scenes, with plans to expand to full productions in the future. The Daniels Fund administers scholarships that are awarded in the spring to graduating high school seniors and are supplemental after other federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid and scholarships. Students may use their scholarship at any two- or four-year accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States with an intention to complete a bachelor’s degree. A boost to food stamp funding that was part of the federal Recovery Act in 2009 has yielded $221 million in economic activity across Colorado and created an estimated 1,508 jobs, according to new research by the Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute.The research is part of an ongoing analysis of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The economic benefits from an increase in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) are just part of the numerous positive effects of the Recovery Act, Fiscal Policy Institute research has found.KGNU’s Beth Bartel finds out more.

Japanese Beetles

Colorado Department of Agriculture warns that 35 states to the east of Colorado are currently considered infested or partially infested with Japanese beetle. The Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) is an insect pest that is not native to Colorado and can cause significant damage to landscape plants, turfgrass, and fruit trees. Originally introduced from Asia to the Eastern US in the early 1900’s, the beetle has slowly managed to expand its range westward. This pest is under quarantine in Colorado which is a regulatory activity that limits the transport of goods that spread pests or diseases.  KGNU’s Matt Smith finds out more from Christi Lightcap.

Camp Wapiyapi

In 1998, a group of University of Colorado Medical students established Camp Wapiyapi to provide at no cost, a respite for children with cancer and their families. Each week-long camp session offered a safe and nurturing environment to allow the children and their siblings the natural freedoms of childhood. Through participation in a variety of group activities, campers learned that they did not face their challenges alone. In 2008, Wapiyapi expanded to include Family Retreats. These retreats offer families that have recently received a diagnosis an environment of understanding, comfort, and guidance to help them through this difficult time. KGNU’s Forest Taft-Young finds out more from Brandon Hatch.
