Monday, February 8th, 2010Sarah Levitt with the Sustainable International Development Institute at the University of Denver tells host Nikki Kayer about the Lambi Fund’s work in Haiti. They have been strengthening civil society with rural development for 15 years with community-based organizations that particularly support women. Their principles of non-violence and non-partisanship are at work in micro-financing, reforestation, education and training. Since the earthquake, they are supporting these same communities that are over-run with people from the cities looking for water and shelter.

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Kathy Kelly co-coordinates Voices for Creative Non-Violence, which is a campaign to end U.S. military and economic warfare. She outlines for host Nikki Kayser what that entails and our lifestyle and policy are complicit. The organization helps those involved in direct non-violent action as a way to get answers and hold our leaders responsible. Kelly defied economic sanctions against Iraq by importing medicines to children and women in 2003. She describes Baghdad during the intense bombing and why she stayed.
Community Mediation Service
Monday, February 1st, 2010The City of Boulder Housing and Human Services Division helps residents find the rules and regulations governing landlord tenent issues that they may need to resolve conflicts. They also attend the weekly evictions court and guide the parties toward solutions. Sometimes this includes a structured mediation session where people can listen to each other and find a better way to communicate. mediators can also help create restorative justice through exploration and problem-solving. Young offenders have the opportunity to demonstrate empathy, take responsibility, repair harms and show respect. The purpose is to try to repair the harm that was done. Program Director Clay Fong describes some creative forms that can take to host Nikki Kayser.
