Longmont Meals on Wheels

Volunteers have been preparing and delivering meals for 41 years to elderly folks living at home in hte Greater Longmont area. Over 350 meals daily provide friendship along with nutrition. Executive Director of Longmont Meals on Wheels, Jerry Gramlich, has plenty of stories for host Nikki Kayser. The program has grown as community members care for each other. The Inn provides services to a very diverse homeless population including single and two parent families, teen parents, individuals exiting domestic violence relationships, persons with physical and/or mental disabilities, single adults, seniors, and teens unable to live at home for a variety of reasons.  Through stories Executive Director, Donna Lovato, describes the  transitional housing, in-house trainings and case management that the three Inn’s provide to increase the  self-sufficiency for our residents. Cottonwood Institute gets teens in Denver and Boulder outdoors and engaged with their natural environment in their Community Adventure Program. Teachers Paige Doughty and Kate Hartman, and students Aleyna Porrecca, Aaron Fox and Zander Deetz at New Vista High School in Boulder are with the program. They are in a school club, Earth Task Force, which is kicking off a year of reducing their school’s carbon footprint. This week they are preparing a lunch of locally produced foods, hosting a lights-out lunch, serving coffee in ‘bring-your-own’ mugs and taking pledges from fellow students. On Earth Day they’ll be throwing the switch on the new solar panels and more.

They are supported by mentors who have themselves gone through the leadership program of Experience Educate. Maya Ellman decribes some of the creative projects of mentors such as Solomon, who is planting trees he got the government to donate.

Each year, the Center for ReSource Conservation empowers more than 30,000 individuals to live a more sustainable life through programming in its energy, water, and waste divisions. Host Nikki Kayser spoke with Deputy Director Spenser Villwock about their new location for recycled building supplies, the new edible Garden-In-A-Box this spring and the solar panels on schools in Boulder. “Rokpa” is the Tibetan word for “to help” or “to serve”.

ROKPA INTERNATIONAL is a charity that was founded in 1980 by its President Dr. Akong Tulku Rinpoche, a Tibetan meditation master and doctor and by Ms. Lea Wyler, its Vice-President, a Swiss actress, together with her father, the well-known Swiss lawyer, Dr. Veit Wyler. The international headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland with national headquarters and branches in 18 countries. In Nepal they run an orphanage for 51 children that were on the streets in Kathmandu. Host Nikki Kayser spoke with Dr. Issac Sobol on The Board of Directors aboth the Children’s Home. Boulder tourists help raise donations.

As first responders to disasters like the earthquake in Haiti, they are one of the most effective organizations bringing medical attention in conflict areas. local musicians and artists are holding fund raisers to make donations to Doctors Without Borders. Host Nikki Kayser spoke with organizer Meagan Morris about a benefit concert at Dazzle Restaurant and why she chose this organization to support.

Rhonda Dern is an RN that provided eye clinics for children, wellness clinics for women and men, and more. She chats with host Nikki Kayser about the types of eye illnesses that are treatable if dedected early. Their Voz y Corazon program is suicide prevention. Methadone clinics and HIV support groups also empower gente to take control of their lives. All the clinics, workshops, support groups and classes at the center are free or low-cost for low-income people. Justin Hererra, program director of Sisters of Color United For Education explains that it is all part of their goal to bring physical and mental health equality to all people.

Veterans Helping Veterans Now’s mission is to connect veterans who need assistance with volunteer veterans, to address the unmet needs of veterans and family members, and to provide information to the public about veteran issues.They have just been awarded two coordinator positions as AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers. VHVnow Director, Judy Nogg, describes some of their duties to host Nikki Kayser – recruiting, training, coordinating, and retaining volunteers; outreach to attract more clients who utilize our drop-in facility; program development and management; and fundraising.  It also includes managing our facility where veterans and family members can relax, socialize, receive services, attend group meetings.
