Coffintop Fire
 
The Coffintop Fire continues to burn in a remote part of northern Boulder County, west of Lyons.
The fire is 40 acres and five percent contained.
Boulder County's Hall Ranch Open Space is closed until further notice.
No evacuations or road closures have been ordered at this time.
Effective today, there is a Fire Ban on open burning and the discharge of any and all fireworks in the mountain areas of Boulder County. These include the areas west of the North and South Foothills Highways and areas east of the Peak to Peak Highway. The Fire Ban will remain in effect until the hazardous fire conditions subside. Anyone found in violation of the Fire Ban may be be subject to a $500 fine.

Maxwell fire update
The fire remains at 60 acres and is 80 percent contained. Firefighters will continue to secure the line and mop up today and all of Lefthand Canyon Drive will be open at 5 p.m.

6/29 7.00 a.m. - The fire is 80% contained. Full containement is expctected by Wednesday night.

6/28 8.00 a.m. - The fire remains at 60 acres and 40 percent containment
Crews hope to achieve full containment by tonight; 145 people continue to work the fire. One helicopter and two single-engine air tankers are available Lower Lefthand Canyon Drive is open to all traffic from U.S. 36 to Olde Stage Road. Lefthand Canyon Drive remains closed from Olde Stage Road to James Canyon Drive to allow firefighters to work unimpeded
The fire was caused by an unattended campfire 50 feet north of Lefthand Canyon Drive



6/27 8.00 p.m. - The fire has been downsized from 100 acres to 60 acres based on GPS mapping and information from a helicopter flight this afternoon.

The blaze is not expected to be fully contained Monday tonight. Tmeperatures on Tuesday could reach the 90s with low humidigy and renewed winds, contributing to possible flare ups. Residents are advised that more smoke and fire activity will be visible on Tuesday.

6/27 4:00 p.m. - Fire is now 40% contained. Left Hand Canyon is still closed except for emergency vehicles.

6/27 9:30 a.m. - Update on Maxwell Fire

Update on Maxwell Fire:

Fire is 25% contained
Fire started mile from shooting range, but cause has not been identified
Fire size is estimated at 100 acres, moving in a NW direction w/ spot fires
Last night, firefighters created a back burn to protect south end of fire so fire would not cross Lefthand Canyon (to protect Boulder Heights)
With overnight high humidity, fire laid down, no growth in size
80 firefighters are working the fire, including two hot shot crews (two additional hot shot crews are expected later today)
Type 2 helicopter will be arriving today to get a better estimate of fire/size
2 single engine air tankers available
2 heavy tankers available
After helicopter reconnaissance, the Incident Command Team will evaluate and use tankers as needed
Objective is to keep fire north of Lefthand, south of Spruce Gulch, west of Carnage Canyon, east of Castle Gulch
No structures/homes are threatened at this time
Firefighters are dealing with steep and rocky terrain, making additional containment difficult
Road closures remain the same Lefthand closed at U.S. 36 to James Canyon Drive (access to local residents only from U.S. 36 to Olde Stage Rd.)
2 or 3 homes remain in the mandatory evacuation area


6/26 - 9:25 p.m.
Do to lack of need, the evacuation center at the Boulder YMCA is now closed as are the animal shelters at the Boulder County Fairgrounds and Longmont Humane Society.

6/26 - 9:15 p.m.
Crews are begining a back burn in the fire area, so an increase in smoke may be visible.

6/26 - 9:05 p.m.

340 emergency notification messages were sent to residents, warning them to be on standby for an evacuation. Residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary.



50 firefighters are working the fire; others are staged in Lefthand Canyon. Air tankers have made multiple drops of fire retardent.


6/26 8 p.m. - Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at the Boulder YMCA
An evacuation center for residents of Lefthand Canyon is set-up at the YMCA, 28th & Mapleton in Boulder.

6/26 7:50 p.m. - USFS is in command of the fire

6/26 7:30 p.m. - Maxwell Fire Road Closures

Roads closed to public traffic:

1. Left Hand Canyon at North Foothills Highway (local traffic allowed with I.D. to Old Stage Rd.)
2. James Canyon at Lefthand Canyon to Old Stage Rd
3. Old Stage at Lefthand Canyon to James Canyon


6/26 6 p.m. - Fire in Lefthand Canyon

Firefighters have responded to a fire near the 3.7 Mile Marker on U.S. Forest Service land. There is a mandatory evacuation for residents within a 1.5 mile radius of the 3.7 MM. The Emergency Operations Center is activated to help support firefighting efforts. Additional information will be posted here when details are available.



The "Maxwell Fire" began at approximately 5:39 p.m. this afternoon. Fire is estimated to be between 10 and 20 acres in size.



The Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont is open for large animal (horses and livestock) evacuations.


6/26 - 9:05 p.m.

Many firefighters are on scene, with 3 Type 1 crews and 3 Type 2 crews (20-person crews) ordered. 2 heavy air tankers and 2 SEATS (single engine air tankers) worked the fire Sunday afternoon and evening. Air resources are ordered for Monday, including a Type 2 Helicopter. Fifteen engines have also been ordered.
