Joe Strummer's "London Calling"
|
KGNU will broadcast Joe Strummers BBC radio program London Calling weekdays at noon beginning September 1st and running through September 18th. The London Calling broadcasts will conclude with a musical tribute to Strummers legendary band, The Clash, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on 9/18.
London Calling is a surprisingly eclectic series of thirty-minute broadcasts, hosted by the legendary gravel-voiced punk-poet from The Clash, Joe Strummer. These historic broadcasts demonstrate the breadth of Strummers musical tastes and his intense passion for music.
Even as he toured the world with The Clash, Strummer still had a dream to one day spin records for the BBC World Service where he heard the latest UK hits over his shortwave radio growing up as a teenager in Africa.
He finally got his wish in 1998, when BBC World Service premiered Joe Strummers London Calling. Between that first broadcast and 2001, Strummer hosted a series of programs with a simple two-step formula: place man in studio with vast eclectic record collection; turn on transmitter. His globe-spanning playlists included many of the rock, reggae and folk artists that inspired The Clash, alongside many other surprises.
In listening to these broadcasts one thing is clear, Joe Strummer would have loved KGNU.
